Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF) B.C. Leadership Chair in Multimodal Technology for Healthcare Innovation

• The Chair was created to advance the capabilities of Simon Fraser University and Fraser Health in healthcare innovation, specifically in the areas of brain imaging technologies, virtual simulation, remote monitoring (including home monitoring) and assistive technologies.
• Recent estimates from Brain Canada state that one in three Canadians will be affected by a disease, disorder or injury of the brain or nervous system. This may include autism, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s and concussions, making brain disorders a great health challenge of the 21st Century.
• The Chair was developed through a partnership that sees the Province of B.C. provide $2.25 million through its Leading Edge Endowment Fund (LEEF), and SFU and Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation each contribute $1.5 million. Fraser Health Authority provides access to lab space and resources to facilitate research, transfer of knowledge, and interactions with clinicians and healthcare professionals.
• The appointment of Dr. Ryan D’Arcy to the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation B.C. Leadership Chair in Multimodal Technology for Healthcare Innovation marks the fifth LEEF Chair to be named at Simon Fraser University. It is the first academic chair to be established at Surrey Memorial Hospital and Fraser Health.
• This is the first LEEF Chair to be located at the SFU Surrey campus; Dr. D’Arcy will mobilize research with community health partners and business in the Fraser Health Region.
• The Chair proposal was initiated by the Province of B.C., Simon Fraser University and Fraser Health. SFU, Fraser Health and Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation played an instrumental role in developing a vision for the Chair and in recruiting Dr. D’Arcy.
