British Columbia investment in research and innovation is a long-term commitment to a strong and vibrant economy, safe, healthy communities and a sustainable environment. The Province has invested more than one billion dollars in research and innovation since 2001, nearly $250 million in the 2006 provincial budget alone. These funds are for a wide array of research projects including significant investments in research to improve treatments and seek cures for major health-care challenges such as depression, cancer and spinal cord injuries.
One of these investments is $56.25 million for the Leading Edge Endowment Fund for 20 British Columbia Leadership Chairs and nine Regional Innovation Chairs. These research chairs will support our post-secondary institutions’ ability to recruit and retain world-class researchers. By doing so it will further innovations in health care, environmental stewardship and other public services that will enhance not only the lives of British Columbians, but those of people around the world.
British Columbia has an incredible wealth of research talent, ability and creativity. The provincial government is working together with the private and post-secondary sectors to create a nurturing, supportive environment necessary to grow our research community and advance innovation.
Government is committed to investing in research and development because we believe that they are essential for the growth of a knowledge-based economy and society.
The importance of research and innovation and the effect they have on the world we live in cannot be overstated. Research and innovation are, quite literally, changing our day-to-day lives and the landscape of our communities – they are helping create the tools British Columbians need to succeed and prosper.
I am pleased to be part of the Leading Edge Endowment Fund’s inaugural newsletter, to share in our achievements, and to pledge our further commitment to cultivating research and innovation in British Columbia.
Honourable Murray Coell, Minister of Advanced Education and Minister Responsible for Research and Technology.
